Yahoo Japan rolls forward with Taobao 淘寶 for eCommerce

A follow-up to our last post Yahoo! Japan Partners with Alibaba’s Taobao, Japanese suppliers can officially sell their products to China consumers through Taobao.com, while China suppliers can export their goods to Japanese buyers through Yahoo! Japan.

Taobao, the China largest C2C (consumers to consumers) online eCommerce site and Yahoo! Japan jointly launched TaoJapan and Japan China Mall today.

Online stores on Taobao will be able to offer products from China to Japanese consumers at Yahoo! Japan’s China Mall…The new services will allow Internet users in both countries to buy and sell using systems and procedures that are familiar to them in their native languages, one of the biggest hurdles to doing business in either country, said Masayoshi Son, chairman of Yahoo! Japan and CEO of mobile phone carrier Softbank.

Yahoo! Japan is operated by Yahoo Japan Corporation listed at Tokyo Stock Exchange. It includes search, content, community, e-commerce, and mobile services among its many services.

Launched in 2003, Taobao is part of Alibaba group. Both SoftBank and US-based Yahoo! are shareholders in Alibaba. Hong Kong-listed Alibaba.com (HKSE 1688) rolled out its AliExpress last year for China wholesalers.

“We will have 250 million customers, handling transactions totaling 3.8 trillion yen. As early as this year the world’s largest Internet shopping site will emerge,” Yahoo Japan Chairman Masayoshi Son said.

Alibaba Chairman Jack Ma, meanwhile, said he wanted to provide a chance for small- and medium-sized companies to expand their sales opportunities.
