The announcement  was made earlier to allow both parties to cross sell into each other’s markets, boosting reach and market shares. Alibaba would list about 8 million products while Yahoo! Japan would list about 50 million products for sale in each other’s countries.

The joint platform will go live on June 1st, 2010 and is expected to generate total transaction volumes worth US$42 billion and attract 260 million users for the two companies.

“We are pleased to help Japanese small businesses sell their products to China on our Taobao platform as we believe more choice is a good thing. As a result of this initiative, our respective customers will eventually be able to choose from millions of products from China and Japan,” said Jack Ma, chairman and CEO of Alibaba Group, parent of Taobao.

China’s search leader Baidu announced in January a joint venture agreement with Rakuten, a top Japanese online retailer, to launch a virtual shopping mall targeting the world’s largest online population.

B2B (Business to Business) and B2C (Business to Conusmer) marketplaces in China has surged in recent years, as buyers look to the Internet for better deals from more reliable suppliers in the nation’s highly fragmented e-commerce sector.
